World Autism Awareness Day: Because We Don’t Know Much about Autism

Autism, most of us often heard about it. But do you really understand what autism is? As a matter a fact we don’t understand much about autism. We often think that people with autism are weirdoes who have their own world.  They are bunch of strange people who can‘t communicate in the normal way. Even we often use autism in our joke, isn’t it? Lack of knowledge about autism, that’s the reason we use autism to refer any of us who doesn’t care about surroundings and enjoy their activities on their own.

Autism is not a mental disorders or craziness. Autism is a complex neurological disorder that impairs a person’s ability to communicate and relate to others. People with autism tend to have rigid routines and repetitive behaviors. However, people with autism could live normally just like the rest of us. With a proper treatment, they could completely live with other people without boundaries. With the fact that most of us don’t really understand autism much, the United Nation initiated the World Autism Awareness Day. The World Autism Awareness Day was established with the resolution of 62nd UN General Assembly Session in December 2007 and since then UN proclaimed the World Autism Awareness Day on April, 2 each year. This resolution made Autism as one out of only three specific diseases with official day.

The World Autism Awareness Day was initiated to rise up world’s attention of autism. Global attention is needed to make us understand about autism disorders that affect tens of millions people in the world. The World Autism Awareness Day encourages all governments to take a national initiative to give complete education about autism and raise awareness that people with autism shouldn’t be discriminated. The World Autism Awareness Day is also used to promote early diagnosis and early intervention of autism.

The World Autism Awareness Day has been celebrated throughout the world. Many countries have their own initiative to celebrate this day. There are many activities and events regarding The World Autism Awareness Day. They are ranging from public campaign, fund raising, public lecture, seminars, and many more. All events have the same goals; to raise public awareness and knowledge about autism, bring people with autism to connect with the community, and promoting the importance of early diagnosis as well as the right intervention and treatment to people, especially children with autism. You can join with this global awareness and at least, you can start it by stop joking with autism. It could bring huge impact.
